It’s Time to Shift Your Perspective on Health

It’s time to shift the way we think about health. The mindset many of us have adopted over the past decades is limited. If we want meaningful, lasting change, we need a broader perspective. We must move from a closed, reductionist view of health toward a more open, holistic understanding of our lives. Here are four areas where that shift can begin.
Expand What We Eat
There is no magic food or quick fix when it comes to nutrition. Many individuals hope for that one food that, if eaten regularly, will eliminate health worries. New foods and rediscovered options are often touted as the missing link. This is never the case. True nutrition is about variety, vibrancy, freshness, and balance.
We must expand the foods we eat at home. This means moving away from processed and packaged products that are largely stripped of real nutritional value. The more foods we try, the more likely we are to find something new we love. This approach works at home for our children too. As parents, modeling an expanded menu will encourage our children to embrace a real food, whole food diet.
Expand How We Exercise
It’s time to move beyond the same old exercise routine. Limiting our physical activities to repetitive practices can be as problematic as not moving at all. Our bodies are designed to move dynamically. Too much of our time today is spent sitting or doing repetitive motions.
We must mix it up. Spend time at the gym working on strength, cardio, balance, and flexibility. Get outside and play. Run and jump with your kids or join a recreational sports league. Go for walks and breathe in the fresh air. Take up bike riding or disc golf. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you are moving your body; you're moving in the right direction.
Expand Our Conception of Health
We are not victims of our genes. The idea that our genes dictate our health future is outdated. We now know that lifestyle choices can turn genes on and off. In fact, the lifestyle choices we embrace impact our health more than any other factor.
When we feel sick or not at our best, we aren’t dependent on someone else to bring us back to balance. That responsibility largely rests with us. Our health is our greatest asset, and we are responsible for the path our health takes. Our health team should be expansive: doctors, naturopaths, massage therapists, trainers, therapists, local farmers, and more. Anyone who can provide information, resources, and support for our health is worth considering. What we do with that support is up to us.
Expand and Connect with Others in Your Health Journey
It is important to share what we are doing for our health and our lives. Equally important is not judging what others are doing for their own health. Everyone must walk their unique path. We can be a great resource and inspiration to others. Encouraging each other helps us learn what works and what doesn’t. We can try new things, embrace those that help, and let go of practices that don’t serve us.
The online world makes connection easier than ever, but real, in-person connection still matters. Building a supportive community can enhance your health journey.
The Power of Mindset
Shifting your mindset is crucial. When you embrace a holistic view of health, you open yourself to new possibilities. This perspective allows you to explore various aspects of wellness, from nutrition to mental health. Remember, health is not just the absence of illness; it’s a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
The Role of Self-Care
Self-care is essential in your health journey. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary. Taking time for yourself helps recharge your batteries. Whether it’s reading a book, meditating, or enjoying a hobby, self-care contributes to your overall well-being. Prioritize activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
Embracing Change
Change can be daunting, but it’s also an opportunity for growth. Embrace the changes you want to make in your life. Start small and gradually incorporate new habits. Celebrate your progress, no matter how minor it may seem. Each step forward is a step toward a healthier you.
The Importance of Education
Educating yourself about health and wellness is empowering. Knowledge is a powerful tool. Stay informed about nutrition, exercise, and holistic health practices. Attend workshops, read books, and follow reputable sources. The more you know, the better equipped you are to make informed decisions about your health.
Finding Your Balance
Finding balance in life is key. It’s easy to get caught up in work, family, and other responsibilities. However, it’s vital to carve out time for your health. Establish a routine that incorporates exercise, healthy eating, and self-care. Balance doesn’t mean perfection; it means making choices that support your well-being.
Conclusion
As we expand our view of health, we expand our lives. Recognizing our patterns and choosing to shift them is what separates a restricted life from an expansive one.
Go. Grow. Live.
