Doctor as Teacher: What Medicine Has Forgotten

The word “doctor” comes from the Latin word docere, meaning “to teach.”

At its core, medicine was never meant to be only about diagnosing and treating symptoms. It was meant to be a relationship rooted in education, conversation, and understanding. Time spent with patients, explaining what is happening in the body, discussing options, and answering questions was once a central part of care. That process helped people feel informed, supported, and more confident in the direction of their health.

Over time, that experience has changed.

Today, many medical visits feel rushed. It is not uncommon for the wait to last longer than the appointment itself, with only a few minutes of direct interaction with the doctor. In that short window, there is often little space to fully explore questions or understand the bigger picture. As a result, patients can leave feeling uncertain, unheard, or disconnected from their own care.

This is not simply a failure on the part of doctors or patients. It is a reflection of the system itself. Physicians are often working within tight schedules and insurance constraints that limit the time they can spend with each individual. At the same time, patients are trying to make meaningful decisions about their health in a compressed and often overwhelming environment.

Both sides are often left wanting more. More time. More clarity. More understanding.

In my own experience as a physician, there is a very real difference in how a day feels when there is enough time to truly connect with patients. When questions are asked and answered, when options are explained clearly, and when there is space for conversation, both the patient and the doctor leave that interaction feeling more grounded and confident. That sense of understanding matters more than most people realize.

At Vital Force Naturopathy, this idea of doctor as teacher is not just a philosophy, it is a core part of how I work with patients. When people understand how their body works and why certain recommendations are being made, they are no longer dependent on being told what to do. They begin to think differently about their health. They ask better questions. They make more informed decisions. And over time, that leads to more meaningful and lasting change.

Even within the current healthcare system, there are ways for patients to take a more active role in their care and improve the quality of their interactions with their doctors. Coming into an appointment with a few clear questions written down can make a significant difference, especially when time is limited. Bringing a trusted friend or family member can provide support and help capture important details that might otherwise be forgotten. Scheduling appointments earlier in the day, when possible, can sometimes allow for a more focused interaction before the pace of the day accelerates. And rather than overwhelming the visit with large amounts of outside information, it is often more helpful to focus on a few specific concerns that matter most.

These small shifts can change the tone of an appointment. They create space for better communication and help ensure that the time you do have is used in a way that truly supports your health.

Ultimately, becoming more proactive in your healthcare is one of the most important steps you can take. When you move from being a passive recipient of care to an active participant, the entire experience changes. You begin to feel more heard, more informed, and more in control of the decisions that shape your health.

That is where better outcomes begin. Health is not something that happens to you. It is something you build through understanding, communication, and ownership.

Stay curious. Stay empowered. Pursue health always. ~Dr. Swanz
