Are Eggs Really Bad for You? Let’s Look Closer

Every few years, eggs seem to end up back on trial. Here's an old article from 2012 suggesting that eating eggs might be as dangerous as smoking. That’s a bold claim… and one worth taking a closer look at.
This study looked at individuals who were already part of a vascular disease prevention program. Most participants had existing cardiovascular issues, many had already experienced a stroke, and the average age was over 60. They were asked about their smoking history and how many eggs they ate each week. Researchers then measured plaque buildup in their carotid arteries. Not surprisingly, plaque increased with both smoking and reported egg consumption. This is where things start to fall apart. This type of study doesn’t establish cause and effect. It raises questions. And even the researchers acknowledged the need for more detailed investigation.
If we’re looking at a group of already unhealthy individuals and not accounting for their overall diet, body composition, or activity level, how can we isolate eggs as the problem? The article does not even mention the quality of the eggs and how that may influence the findings. Free range, organic eggs are a totally different food from the industrial raised, grain fed variety. Were these eggs part of a balanced, whole-food diet…or part of a fast food breakfast sandwich? That distinction matters.
Keep this in mind for your health... there’s no shortage of nutrition headlines designed to grab attention. But real health isn’t built on headlines. It’s built on understanding context, asking better questions, and focusing on the quality of what we eat.
For now, I’ll stick with real food… including my free-range, organic eggs. ~Dr. Swanz
